The Program
Small communities thrive when people act. For this
reason, we feel it crucial to teach our students that the mechanics of
committee processes is the framework for much of volunteer life. Beginning in grade 4, VCS students study, observe and participate in
the roles and responsibilities of committee positions the processes of board governance and parliamentary procedure.
Governance knowledge alone will only go so far, good communication is
important too! As part of its leadership training, VCS students receive
traditional, teacher-directed instruction in all subjects, with the goal
of developing informed, articulate communicators.
Reading and Writing: classic literature, spelling, grammar, punctuation,
penmanship, cultural knowledge arithmetic and Mathematics: accurate
mental calculation, drill and practice, correction of mistakes.
Mandatory Second Language: German starts in Kindergarten, with option of
French in grade 4 as numbers warrant
skill development, confidence building, memorization
basic rules of etiquette are directly taught as an addition to the
regular Alberta Health program.
Valhalla Community School is operated by the Valhalla School Foundation.
It has a student population of children from Kindergarten to Grade 8,
with Grade 9 to be offered in the fall of 2011.
Currently, the Alberta government student enrolment cap is set at 110.
We are nearly there, so if you live outside of the immediate Valhalla
area and wish to register your child in the coming years, don't delay.
VCS runs a fleet of 5 buses which fan out west to Hythe, east to
LaGlace, south to Beaverlodge as well as the Valhalla catchment area.
Student busing is a free service.
Right now, student transport is only guaranteed for those living inside
VCS's chosen Valhalla boundaries, so be aware that student busing is
separate from registration acceptance. Be sure to ask about this if you
will be needing bus transportation for your child.
Valhalla Community School is pleased to deliver its students to the
school and will make every effort to do so as long as factors of space,
distance and time permit.
